In these challenging times, the significance of having good friends cannot be overstated. As someone who values meaningful relationships, I am deeply grateful for my friend John Waters, who holds a special place in my heart. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most remarkable individuals I have ever had the privilege of knowing. John serves as the Lead Pastor at Elevating Life Church in Fort Morgan, Colorado, while I serve as the Senior Pastor. Our shared passion for serving our congregation and community has not only brought us closer but has also strengthened our bond. Through our friendship, I have gained a profound appreciation for the essential trait of "diligence" that permeates John's and my time together where Christian Character Counts.
One fascinating aspect of John's character is his love for sloths, which creates a delightful irony when considering his diligent approach to everything he does. Diligence serves as the antithesis of slothfulness or laziness. It embodies being persistent, dedicated, and hardworking in pursuing one's goals. For Christians, diligence entails a steadfast commitment to diligently learn and incorporate the teachings of Christ, thereby cultivating and manifesting a Christ-like character. Jesus emphasized this when He said, "If you love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). In loving Jesus, one cannot afford to be slothful in adhering to His teachings, as they guide the purpose of our lives and gives good witness towards God.
When Christians fail to embrace diligence, it can have far-reaching consequences for all communities, churches, towns, and beyond. Laziness or slothfulness can cause the advancement of God's kingdom to stagnate, leading to unmet needs of people and the world. However, embracing diligence wholeheartedly can bring about transformative impacts, allowing God's Eternal power and divine nature to thrive (Romans 1:20).
To combat the problem of slothfulness, Christians must wholeheartedly embrace diligence. This necessitates a diligent pursuit of learning and applying the teachings of Christ to their lives. Diligence in studying the Bible, prayer, and the practical application of principles such as love, compassion, and service can lead to personal growth and have a profound positive and healthy impact on the lives of individuals and communities alike.
In light of our understanding of diligence, I invite you to reflect upon your own level of diligence as a Christian. Consider the extent to which you diligently pursue a Christ-like character and actively live out His teachings in your daily life. I wholeheartedly challenge you to embrace diligence as a core aspect of your Christian character.
