Christian Character Counts: Forgiveness

In my newfound faith as a Christian in 1989, I learned a valuable lesson about the power of forgiveness. It was early in my journey, and I made a grave mistake at a military function. Consumed by immaturity and the influence of alcohol, I lashed out at a fellow believer, subjecting him to public humiliation. The next day, burdened by guilt, I approached him to seek forgiveness. However, his response was filled with anger and pain. Though uncertain if he has truly forgiven me, I have chosen to forgive myself and others who have wronged me. This experience has taught me the transformative power of forgiveness and the importance of it where Christian Character Counts.

Have you ever felt hurt or wronged by someone? Like my story, it's an all too familiar experience in our lives. But as followers of Christ, we are called to embrace a different perspective on forgiveness. Matthew 18:21-22 says, "Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, 'Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?' Jesus answered, 'I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times (NIV),” Jesus' words provide us with a powerful lesson on forgiveness.

Jesus' response challenges our instinct to hold grudges and seek revenge. He invites us to be people who rise above the hurt and choose forgiveness. But what does it mean to be people who forgive? It means letting go of resentment, anger, and the desire for retribution. It involves releasing the burden of holding onto the offense of another and embracing a heart of love - compassion, grace, mercy, and persistence.

To understand the depth of forgiveness, we must look to God's example. Just as God forgives us time and time again, we are called to extend that forgiveness to others. God's forgiveness is boundless, and it knows no limits. He forgives our sins, no matter how often we stumble and fall. In the same way, we are challenged to offer forgiveness to those who have wronged us. Furthermore, forgiveness is a powerful act that brings healing and restoration. When we choose to forgive, we release ourselves from the chains of bitterness and resentment. It opens the door for reconciliation and allows God's love to flow freely in our lives. Forgiveness doesn't excuse the offense but frees us to move forward in love, peace, and joy.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be people who understand the true meaning of forgiveness. In Matthew 18:21-22, Jesus teaches us that a set number does not limit forgiveness but is to be offered limitlessly. Let us embrace the example of God's forgiveness and choose to "get over it" by extending forgiveness to others. In doing so, we will experience the transformative power of forgiveness and reflect God's love and mercy in our lives.

With a forgiving heart,

Pastor Drake
