“Stay loyal to one another, and you shall stay together forever.” - Unknown. Loyalty is a virtue of Christ that is often undervalued in our modern society and slipping away more and more in the Christian faith — matrimony, family, church, and community. In a world where individualism and self-centeredness often prevail, it is easy to overlook the significance of staying true to our commitments and honoring relationships, notably marriage. However, the teachings of Jesus remind us of the enduring value of loyalty, where Christian Character Counts.
Jesus is straightforward in teaching about loyalty and the sacred bond between a husband and wife, marriage. He emphasizes the importance of loyalty and the commitment to remain united as one flesh, as intended by God. Jesus said, "…at the beginning, the Creator made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh?' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no one separate. Matthew 19:4-6 (NIV)."
Marriage is more than just a legal contract or a social institution. It is a sacred covenant established by God, where two individuals become one flesh. The formula is 1 x 1, not 1 + 1. Just like our union with God for eternity, marriage is meant to be a lifelong commitment characterized by love and loyalty. Jesus affirms this by stating, “What God has joined together, let no one separate.” Loyalty in marriage involves being faithful to one’s spouse, both emotionally and physically. It means standing by their side through thick and thin, supporting and encouraging one another. Loyalty requires a selfless attitude, where the needs and well-being of the spouse are prioritized above personal desires or temptations.
Remaining loyal is a profound force beyond the confines of a matrimonial relationship. It encompasses our constant devotion to our families, friends and faith in the Almighty. Loyalty demands that we stay dependable, trustworthy, and reliable, always upholding our commitments and standing by those who count on us. This tireless allegiance is both vertical and horizontal in nature. Our first priority is our direct relationship with God for all eternity, followed closely by indirect relationships with God through treating others well, as we honor God's desire for harmony, connectedness, and loyalty through Christ's way, truth, and lifestyle.
To build genuine relationships, it's important to focus on nurturing loyalty. This means making a deliberate effort to prioritize and engage in honest communication with those who are important to us. Credibility is a key aspect of loyalty, building trust, and forming a foundation of reliability. Additionally, showing admiration and affection is crucial in demonstrating the value we place on the other person. By committing to these practices, we can establish a strong foundation for a meaningful and fulfilling connection where we can remain loyal to each other and where Christian Character Counts.
With love and loyalty,
