The Belt of Truth: Subjective Truth

Personally and impartially speaking, subjective truth is a personal truth, and personally is not necessarily factual or practical. It’s about the expression of belief, opinion, or personal preference. Meaning it cannot be proved right or wrong by any generally accepted authority. Simply put, it’s all personal! The challenge is understanding where personal begins and ends.

Where subjective truth begins and ends depends on the distinction between “that” and “in.” “That” is always “outward,” objective, and “in” is always “inward,” subjective. What do I mean?  Let’s use faith, for example. The distinction between faith “that” something is true and faith “in” something is the difference between objective and subjective truth. The objective or “outward” evidence for God delivers the means needed to believe that God exists, which, in turn, leads to subjective or “inward” truths that a person or people submit to in a trusting fashion. Hence the Christian faith. Hebrews 11:6 spells it out subjectively “in” the Christian faith. “And without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe “that” He is [“that” is where God exist—objective] and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him [those who seek Him must get the objective God “in” them—subjectively].”

Please understand that subjectivity and objectivity are different ways of KNOWING. The greatest thing to know about subjective truth is that it is not the opposite of objective truth. Since objectivity does not guarantee truth (this happens when “that” is not big enough) and subjectivity is not necessarily false, it makes sense that objectivity is not the exact opposite of subjectivity. When the objective and subjective align with each other, we are starting to understand “The Belt of Truth” and why it is so important to “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).”

The belief (subjective) that every person is entitled to an opinion does not mean that every thought is as good as any other. Not all ideas are equally valuable or verifiable. Some statements are better informed, practical, or loving, objectively and subjectively speaking. Flawed beliefs, shoddy views, and one-sided judgments based on partial facts or bad reasoning skills result in a harmful outcome, again, objectively and subjectively speaking.

Since subjective truth is a different way of knowing, it is essential to participate respectfully in communication with those whose subjective claims differ from ours. It is possible to respect the person even while disagreeing with that person’s beliefs or opinion. Jesus was the best example of this claim. As shared by more intelligent people than me, it’s been said, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it (Voltaire).” Something every Christian ought to respect and appreciate.
