The Breastplate of Righteousness – Character that Covers the Heart

In our previous blog, we explored righteousness as God’s unwavering standard for building just and right “equable” relationships—between us and God, and with all creation. Righteousness, in simple terms, is doing what is right in God's eyes. This time, we turn our attention to one of the most powerful symbols of protection in the believer’s life: the Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14). Why a breastplate? Because righteousness must not only be rooted in our hearts; it must also be worn. The breastplate protects our core—our heart, where our values, principles, and motivations reside. The armor we wear to shield that heart is character. However, it’s not just any character, it’s divine.

The Breastplate of Righteousness is forged from the character of Christ. It is not built on the standards or expectations of our family, culture, or society. This character transcends those influences. It reflects Jesus—His wisdom, His virtue, His integrity, and His grace.

To understand character, imagine it as a handcart being pulled forward on two wheels: Wisdom – the understanding of what is right in God’s eyes. Virtue – the consistent practice and habits of what is right in God’s eyes. Wisdom without virtue is insight without action. Virtue without wisdom is action without direction. But together, they form the rolling strength of godly character.

Another image of character is a tree—strong, fruitful, and life-giving. The root system represents your connection to God’s love, drawing in Water, which represents godly influence (relationships) through His Spirit and Word, and Nutrients that equate to Biblical principles that nourish your soul. From those roots, a shoot emerges, developing into the trunk—your character! The goal of that trunk is to become a Tree of Life that can meet the demands of reality, good and evil (Proverbs 11:30), offering strength, shade, and sustenance to others. "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked... but whose delight is in the law of the Lord... That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season" (Psalm 1:1–3).

Every day, life tests the strength of your character. Temptation, such as the urge to lie or cheat, pressure from peers or society to conform, fear of failure or rejection, compromise on your values for personal gain—all are aimed at your heart. Without the breastplate of Christlike character, your heart is exposed and vulnerable to those evildoers. “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23).

So, the question is: What are you wearing over your heart? And more importantly: Who are you becoming? Here are some steps to cover your heart correctly. First, immerse yourself in God’s Word daily, learning the principles (the fundamental truths, teachings, beliefs) of Christ. “The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple” (Psalm 119:130). Feed on wisdom. Build your root system. Next, reflect on Christ’s character. Study the Gospels and note how Jesus responded with grace, truth, humility, and boldness in His teachings. Additionally, practice one instruction and virtue at a time. Treat it like building a house (Matthew 7:24-27). Whether it’s humility, joyfulness, or gentleness—be intentional. Character is built one choice and command at a time. Another critical step is to find accountability (this is how righteousness connects with justice). Surround yourself with people who will help you build, not bend, your character. Their support and guidance will be invaluable on your journey. Lastly, pray for transformation, not just protection. Ask God not only to guard your heart but to grow your heart into His likeness.

Let the roots of God’s truth run deep into your soul. Allow wisdom to shape your mind. Let virtue guide your steps. And may your character—formed by Christ—be the armor that guards your heart and blesses others. This week, choose one area of your character to strengthen. Name it. Work on it. Guard it. Grow it. The world needs people of character. God is calling you to be one.

Let this call to action motivate and inspire you to take the necessary steps towards spiritual growth and understanding biblical principles.

Until next time, stay salty and shine bright!
