The Shield of Faith: The Final Move – Who Do You Want to Be?

“Who do you want to be today… who do you want to be?” – Devo

If you knew me back in the 80s, or if you’ve read my devotions or heard me preach, you know I wasn’t grooving to synth-pop or rocking parachute pants. I was a hard rocker through and through. Zeppelin, Dio, Ozzy… those were my peeps. My soul leaned into guitar solos, not synthesizers.

But recently, I caught myself humming a Devo tune—yeah, that Devo—the 1984 track “Who Do You Want to Be Today?” And it struck me: that quirky little lyric actually echoes something Jesus asked long before the ‘80s ever got weird. Jesus said it better, and with eternal weight: “Follow Me.” Devo asked a fun question; however, Jesus asked a life-altering one.

“Who do you want to be today?” isn’t about moods or career choices. It’s about identity, direction, and discipleship. And let’s be honest: our goal isn’t to become more like Dio, Ozzy, or even Devo. It’s to become more like Jesus, first and foremost—not more religious, but more fully human in and through Him. And then, we move forward, living by faith, leading with purpose as we bless others with our strengths, gifts, talents, skills, etc.

That’s the true purpose of the Shield of Faith. It’s not just a spiritual defense mechanism we hide behind—it’s directional! It empowers us to advance with courage, to follow Jesus with conviction, and to help others do the same. As Paul writes, “Take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (Ephesians 6:16)

Faith isn’t passive—it’s trust in action. And Jesus didn’t say, “Admire Me,” or “Agree with Me.” He said, “Follow Me.” That’s movement. That’s discipleship. It’s about choosing the path of godliness, one faithful step at a time. It’s how we stop merely surviving the storm and start transforming it.

As we wrap up this Shield of Faith mini-series—part of our yearlong journey through The Armor of God—let’s remember what we’ve uncovered:

Faith is trust—an active, daily reliance on God. We learned that Belief + Action = Faith—a divine formula that brings conviction and momentum to our lives. We discovered that faith protects us by confronting chaos with God’s order. We saw how real faith doesn’t just defend—it resists what’s wrong and advances what’s right. And through it all, we’ve been challenged to face the essential question of discipleship: Who do you want to be… today?

Paul reminds us, “Train yourself for godliness. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:7–8)

As for me, I want to be someone who trusts Jesus so boldly that my life becomes a light in the dark, a guide through the storm, and a force that carries truth forward. And here’s the good news: you get to live that way too.

So stay strong. Shine bright. Suit up.

And get ready—because next, we’re drawing The Sword of the Spirit.
