Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.
~ Genesis 1:2–3 ~
Long, long ago…God brought order to chaos—and He’s still doing it today. How? Through our acts of faith. While chaos bullies its way into our lives uninvited, faith rolls out the welcome mat for God's power to bring order, peace, and purpose (Luke 24:49). Let’s talk about chaos. Not just the kind playing out on the news, but the kind that shows up in your story, in childhood wounds, military mayhem, workplace drama, and ministry madness. For me, chaos wasn’t a stranger. It was a full-time roommate. I grew up with it, wore it in uniform, and still meet it in the church parking lot. So when I talk about trusting God in chaotic times, I’m not handing out Christian bumper stickers, I’m telling the truth. Faith is the only thing that makes sense once your worldview is aligned with God's reality.
As I shared in last week’s devotion, I used to live by the mantra: “Fake it till you make it.” And let’s be honest, it worked... until it didn’t. Especially when I stepped into leadership. I quickly realized that pretending falls flat when you're helping real people through real pain. That’s when I made a crucial shift: I stopped faking and started faithing. Not the kind of faith that puts on a show. I’m talking about genuine, day-by-day, gritty trust—not because I had all the answers, but because I chose to lean on the One who does. That’s when faith became more than a church word. It became my permission to live by divine truth. Piece by piece, step by step, I started building a faith that could stand. I tuned my ears to divine wisdom. I cultivated a holy fear of the Lord. And I finally stopped leaning on my own shaky logic or understanding.
Make no mistake: chaos wants to be the narrator of your life. It’ll try to rewrite your story, question your worth, and shake your confidence. But when you trust God, I mean really trust, you stop reacting to chaos and start responding to truth. Jesus doesn’t offer a worldview based on how things feel in the moment. He offers one built on a foundation that cannot be shaken. And when your heart is anchored to God's eternal goodness, you don’t need to fake anything. You can face everything.
By now, you know the formula: Belief + Action = Faith. So what does that mean when the ground is shaking? Belief says God is real, good, and sovereign. Action says, “I’m going to live like that’s true—even when it’s hard.” And trust is the steady grip that holds the shield high when your arms are worn out.
Let’s pause here and take in the contrast: faith isn’t just about surviving—it’s about living a meaningful life. Chaos, on the other hand, leads to messy moments and miserable memories. But faith? When nurtured and lived out, faith blossoms into meaningful moments and magical memories. Yes, that’s where the real magic is—where miracles break through, and memories worth remembering are made. As faithful Christians, this is our high calling: not to be spectators of chaos, but to create beauty out of brokenness, meaning out of messes, and purpose in the middle of pain; it’s called justice. That’s why we carry the Shield of Faith. It protects what matters most and equips us to create a healing and healthy impact wherever we go.
If you’re wondering how to trust God when everything’s falling apart, here are three anchors that have steadied me: First, speak truth out loud. The world is loud—be louder with truth. Declare God’s Word over your fear. “God is our refuge and strength…” (Psalm 46). Second, do the next right thing. You don’t need the whole map—just the next faithful step. Obedience, even in the face of uncertainty, silences fear. Third, rehearse God’s faithfulness. Your history with God fuels your hope in the midst of the storm. Remember where He’s already shown up. Write it down. Pass it on.
Let’s lock this all in with Scripture—Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” That’s not just a verse—it’s a lifeline. A path through chaos, straight into purpose.
So why do we do this? Because this isn’t just a series. It’s a summons. God doesn’t call us to faith just so we can play it safe—He calls us to forge something beautiful from the mess. To live lives that mean something. To shape moments that matter. To walk in truth and invite others to follow. So suit up. Pick up your shield again. Let’s trust God—not just to defend us in the chaos but to help us build something eternal through it.
Next week, we’ll wrap up our Shield of Faith series. It isn’t just defensive—it’s directional. We don’t just block chaos—we lead others out of it. Because trust doesn’t just survive the storm—it transforms it, where we “get to” live on the offensive side of God and make a difference wherever we may be.
As always: Stay Strong. Shine Bright. Suit Up!
