Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
~ Hebrews 12:1–2 ~
Imagine you’re standing at the edge of a thick, wild forest. The trees tower, the brush is dense, and the way forward looks impossible. Behind you are people who need a path—your family, your friends, maybe even your whole community. Then you notice the weight in your hand. It’s not just any tool. It’s a sword, not for decoration, not for collecting dust, but for clearing a way forward and defending against hidden dangers. At that moment, you realize: you are the trailblazer, empowered by the Sword of the Spirit.
That’s precisely what God calls us to when He places the Sword of the Spirit—His Word—in our hands (Ephesians 6:17). Throughout Scripture, God raised trailblazers. Gideon, the reluctant hero, carved a path of courage when fear dominated his people. Deborah, the wise strategist, cleared a way when no one else would step up. And Jesus, the King of all Trailblazers, cut through the lies of Satan and the weight of sin with God’s Word, blazing a path of salvation for all who follow Him.
Here’s where “common sense” comes in. Most of us define common sense as practical wisdom—living in reality, shaped by experience, and guided by good judgment. But what if true common sense is found not in human opinion but in God’s Word? Scripture anchors us in God’s reality, shaping our judgment so that we see clearly and walk wisely. Proverbs drips with this kind of godly sense—it’s everyday guidance on work, relationships, money, and character. In other words, the Bible is the ultimate common sense, sharpened to perfection with practical application, equipping us for every situation.
And here’s the good news: you don’t have to be a superhero to wield this sword. Every time you open the Bible, every time you apply its truth to a decision, a problem, or a challenging situation, you’re clearing a trail. For instance, when faced with a difficult choice at work, you can turn to Proverbs for guidance on integrity and honesty. When dealing with a strained relationship, you can find comfort and wisdom in the Psalms. You’re not just navigating life for yourself—you’re blazing a way for those who come after you. Your children, coworkers, friends, and neighbors will walk in the trail you leave behind; that’s application!
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
~ 2 Timothy 3:16–17 ~
So, pick up the Sword. Let it guide your common sense, shape your choices, and strengthen your steps. Be the trailblazer God has called you to be. Because the path you cut today may be the very road someone else needs tomorrow. You are not just a follower, but a leader, inspiring others to follow in your footsteps.
Therefore…Stay Strong. Shine Bright. Suit up.
