Wonderfully Weird Command: Seek God's Kingdom

Like many people today, you get bored quickly and need something worth doing. Our Wonderfully Weird Command is "Seek God's Kingdom" from Matthew 6:33, "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you."  When this priceless teaching is confirmed in a person’s character, the Christ habit of "Initiative" is developed, and the problem of idleness or boredom is put to rest.

The problem of idleness or boredom is it is the ground that forms terrible things or evil. As I share with my Granddaughter often, “boring people get bored,” and bad things happen when boring people are idle. Feelings and emotions easily influence them, and they are susceptible to depression, anxiety, anger, poor work performance, loneliness, isolation, etc. Some have gone so far as to say boredom is the “leprosy of the soul” (Jean-Paul Sartre). Chronic idleness and boredom prove life’s emptiness and lack of value in life. Understand that the hour of boredom is the hour of temptation. The Christian who says,” I’m waiting on the call of God” is a true sign or habit of boredom in the idleness of faith.

The countermeasure of idleness is initiative, and initiative is the building block of virtue that gives rise to an extraordinary life. Initiative means doing good things or seeking God’s Kingdom; however, be careful because sin lurks when initiative is misunderstood (Genesis 4:7). As Christians, our chief concern is glorifying God’s desire in all we do and “do good unto all men,” especially those of the household of faith (Galatians 6:10). Following Christ’s example and focusing on building goodness through his Wonderfully Weird Commands is the key to establishing good initiative (“his righteousness”). His righteousness will keep a person pointed in the right direction and avoid stepping onto the wrong path in our selfish desires.

Jesus is the example of the initiative of life. This statement means we are to seek the things of God as a priority over the things of the world. Does this mean that Christians should neglect the roles and responsibilities of daily living? Certainly not. But for the Christ-follower, there should be a difference in attitude toward them. If we take care of God's business – values, purpose, vision, and mission – as a priority, He will care for our business as He promised in relationships with Him and other like-minded people.

The question now is, “Will You?!” Will you seek God’s kingdom first? Will you stop being idle in the faith? Will you dispute the fallacy of waiting on God’s calling, and will you take the initiative to form a Christ-like character, now and for always? Today, I encourage all to take the initiative to become a qualified follower of Christ, a Christian who is never bored and always seeks God’s Kingdom to carry out His will by being in tune with His heart. This love leads to an exciting and vibrant life.

With initiative,

Pastor Drake
